The history and origins how the Chiriqui province got their name has many version. One of the most reliable is that it was derived from Guayme word - "cheriqui", defined by the natives to be the highest point of the summit of the cordillera or a valley of the moon and land of the two large waters. While some believes that it was a name of a famous native for his strength. There are also version telling that it has connection with Cherokees from North Carolina.
